Pre Planning Ideas for the body of the Outfit

So here we are again. Watching The Biggest Loser, playing with this costume idea. I wondered if I am going to ever find a good pattern suitable for the body of this costume. So I decided to try an alternative route. What if I put a plastic garbage bag over my home-made duct tape dress form, then dress lines on it where I wanted the cut to be, wrap duct tape around it and make a super thin dress form of the body of the costume I'm trying to make? What if?

  1. This is another idea. Although your idea is original and there is no reason to believe it won't work too.

Why not try draping a muslin (fabric) instead of the bag?

It's important that your muslin fabric match in drape and type the fabric from which you plan to make your costume. (So if you're using a heavy knit for the final costume, use a similar cheap material for the muslin).

Pin the fabric to the form, mark with markers where the seam lines etc. need to go, then take off the form and transfer to pattern paper.

You will need to add seam allowances. Your muslin won't have them, you must add them to the paper pattern. This is the 5/8" (or whatever your preference) you add outside the seam lines.

Make sure the fabric isn't stretched, stressed or skewed in any way when transferring to the paper or you will have a very ill fitting final product.

After transferring to the paper, sew the muslin together and try it on you to see how it fits. Mark anything that needs to be altered. Don't forget to leave a way to get it on and off. Any changes or adjustments you make to the muslin you also need to make to the paper pattern. You'll have to take out the seams, transfer the changes, and put them back in to see if they fit better. I use a different color marker for each draft. Because it is a muslin, it's ok to use non fabric markers.
